The goal is clear: Beyond-Sleep owns the software of the Sleep Universe. Not a bed controller. A platform. One that turns a one-time hardware sale into an ongoing relationship with the customer.
Done right, the bed becomes the hub for everything that happens in a person's sleep environment: the lighting, the temperature, the biometrics, the routines. Beyond-Sleep becomes the brand that owns that relationship long after the delivery truck leaves.
Why now. Three conditions have converged that make this the right moment to build. First, Eight Sleep's growth and Sleep Number's $2B+ revenue have proven that consumers will pay a premium for smart sleep technology. The market is real and validated. Second, the Matter standard (backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung) has created a unified smart home substrate for the first time; a hub built on Thread 1.3 today can be natively compatible with every major ecosystem from day one. Third, wearables have hit critical mass. Apple Watch alone has over 100 million active users, Oura Ring has crossed one million, and meaningful sleep data is now in consumers' pockets at scale. The data layer that makes a sleep intelligence platform possible did not exist five years ago.
Star Seeds has hardware ready to test. The OKIN Hub design is complete, hardware arriving. The window to establish a position before the mid-market consolidates is open now.
Mark Anthony Racal (Star Seeds engineering) has designed a hub-and-app architecture. No code has been tested yet - hardware is still in transit. What exists is a detailed system design for the OKIN Hub: a Raspberry Pi 4 running Ubuntu with four Seeed XIAO modules connected via serial, each handling a different wireless protocol.
The most important module is the nRF52840 on UART3. It communicates with the CB2542 - the OKIN adjustable bed control box - using a proprietary RF pairing method (Nordic Enhanced Shock Burst) that Star Seeds controls. That protocol is their IP. Getting a command from a phone to a bed is architecturally solved on paper.
On the software side, the hub runs Docker containers for UART bridging, MQTT message routing, time-series storage (InfluxDB), and internal visualization (Grafana). A mobile app connects via MQTT over the local network. Remote access, user accounts, wearable integrations, smart home automation, and any consumer-facing data experience are not yet built.
Beyond-Sleep is entering a category with well-funded incumbents who have already shipped hardware, built datasets, and established consumer trust. Understanding who is already here and where the gaps are shapes every product and positioning decision.

The mid-market gap is real. Eight Sleep and Sleep Number both sit above $1,000 for the hardware alone. A well-executed smart adjustable base in the $600-1,200 range with a polished app experience has no direct competitor today. Beyond-Sleep's manufacturing cost basis is the clearest competitive advantage on the table - the ability to deliver at a price point the incumbents cannot match.
A complete Sleep Universe platform has six layers. Mark's architecture addresses part of Layer 1. Everything else is greenfield. Layers 1-5 are device and integration problems. Layer 6 is a data problem that can only be solved after earlier layers have accumulated data at scale over months.
A customer orders a Beyond-Sleep adjustable base. In the box is the OKIN Hub. They plug it in, open the Beyond-Sleep app, and are guided through setup: pairing the hub to the bed, connecting their wearable, pairing any smart home devices they already own. Consumer IoT onboarding is notoriously the hardest UX problem in hardware; making it feel effortless takes more engineering than most of the features that follow.
Once set up, the app can build the first automated routine: lights dim at 9:30pm, thermostat drops to 67 degrees, bed shifts to sleep position. In the morning: lights ramp up, temperature rises, bed lifts to a reading angle.
Every night is logged. Two product modes emerge over time, and the build sequence matters:
Passive insight (ships first): the app surfaces what it has observed. "Your deepest sleep happens when your room is between 65-68 degrees and your head is at 12 degrees." The customer reads it and decides what to do. This requires only a working data pipeline and can ship early.
Active automation (ships later): the app asks "Want me to set this automatically?" and begins adjusting the environment each night without being asked. This requires paired smart home devices, occupancy detection, and customer trust built over time. It is a Phase 2 or Phase 3 capability.
Three phases. Each phase ships a usable product, not a milestone toward one. A detailed feature matrix and sprint roadmap follow separately once Phase 1 scope is locked.

Sleep data combined with biometrics is sensitive health data under California's CPRA, Washington's My Health My Data Act, and GDPR for international customers. These are architecture decisions, not compliance retrofitted after the fact. They are also a competitive differentiator: Eight Sleep's approach to user data has drawn public criticism, and Beyond-Sleep can own the privacy story explicitly.
This strategy is built on the following assumptions. Each represents a decision point where Beyond-Sleep's direction shapes what gets built and in what order.
- Beyond-Sleep ships the OKIN Hub as a hardware product bundled with or sold alongside their adjustable bases. This is a hardware-plus-software play, not software-only.
- Beyond-Sleep wants to own the platform under their own brand, not white-label a third-party sleep app.
- The consumer app targets end customers, not B2B buyers. Hotels, senior living, and healthcare are distinct products with different regulatory and design requirements.
- Path A (hardware-native, closed ecosystem) is the right first move, with Path B (open platform) as the deliberate long-game evolution once scale is established.
- Star Seeds' proprietary ESB pairing is a moat to protect as the starting point, regardless of future platform direction.
- The mobile app is the data broker for all wearable integrations. There is no server-side pull for Apple Health, Oura, or Fitbit - the app reads from on-device SDKs and routes data to the cloud.
- The subscription tier's value proposition is defined before the data architecture is designed, so the platform captures what it needs to surface the right insights.
- The build is phased over multiple quarters. This is not a 90-day project.
These questions need answers before this document becomes a build proposal. Q1 and Q2 in particular should be resolved before any architecture decisions are made.
- Q1Does Beyond-Sleep align with the Path A recommendation? Idea Tavern recommends starting closed (hardware-native) and opening the platform later at scale. If the vision is open from day one, the architecture changes significantly.
- Q2Who is the primary Beyond-Sleep customer? DTC consumer buying online, retail customer in a showroom, or B2B buyer (hotel, senior living, healthcare)? Each is a different product with different privacy requirements and regulatory posture.
- Q3Is the OKIN Hub bundled or an add-on? Bundled means every bed customer is a software customer by default. Add-on means a smaller but more intentional user base. Each changes the adoption curve and the hardware cost model.
- Q4What does the premium subscription deliver? The free-vs-premium split in section 07 is a proposal. The answer defines the data architecture - the platform needs to capture the right data before the insights can be built.
- Q5Should the hub pursue Matter certification? Thread 1.3 is already in the hardware. The decision to pursue Matter needs to be made before hub firmware is finalized - if yes, it materially changes the firmware scope.
- Q6What is driving the timeline? A product launch, a trade show, a manufacturing run, a funding event? The answer determines how phases are sequenced and where shortcuts are acceptable.
- Q7What does Star Seeds own versus Idea Tavern? Star Seeds owns hub firmware and the ESB protocol. Does Star Seeds also want to own the cloud backend and mobile app, or does Idea Tavern own the full software layer above the hardware?
- Q8What is the priority wearable integration? Apple Health covers the widest audience. Oura Ring gives the richest biometric data. The answer determines where L3 starts and what the first sleep insight actually shows.
